Antistatic

Build up of static charge leads to problems during polymer processing; the use of antistatic masterbatches can dissipate static charge and avoid potential problems.

Overview

Antistatic masterbatches are dispersed through the extrusion process into the plastic film. Migratory antistatic additives travel to the films surface with hydrophilic moiety aligned on the surface. The hydrophilic heads of the antistatic molecules attract moisture and create a thin layer of water on the surface. This layer dissipates the electric charge. There are also non-migratory permanent antistatic additives. These additives are typically polymeric and require high loadings to allow for ion conduction through the plastic part, dissipating static charge.

Each type of antistatic additive has its own unique performance. The difference in performance is based on the chemistry of the antistatic additive used, permanency, processing conditions, dosage level, the presence of other additives and humidity in many cases.

Features

Ingenia provides a range of antistatic masterbatch solutions, each designed to meet various performance goals, in a range of applications. Additionally, we offer highly efficient antistatic solutions that require low letdown ratios for minimal impact to other properties.

Antistat masterbatches have several benefits for polymer processing applications, some examples include:

  • Antistatic concentrate will reduce the buildup of static between pellets. Without the antistatic additive pellets that repel each other can lead to dosing challenges.
  • During filling operations of powdered materials without antistatic additives, the seal areas of the packaging may become fouled due to powder product adhering to the film.
  • Static buildup in film processing can result in film clinging to itself if there is insufficient or no antistatic additive present.
  • Dust may adhere to the plastic product or packaging and reduce consumer appeal if antistatic additives are not used.
  • For explosives packaging and electronic packaging, antistatic masterbatches reduce the likelihood of a spark, which can be catastrophic.
